Immersed tunnels

As leaders in immersed tunnels for over 30 years, we have developed a world-leading speciality in their design and engineering. We can explore the potential for an immersed tunnel in your project and help realise it to the highest standard.

The benefits of immersed tunnels

Immersed tunnels have a number of benefits that make them an attractive option in realising links and connections, particularly across waterways and rivers, but also for the crossing of sea straits and special assets (buildings, runways). Shorter crossings benefit from their position immediately under the sea bed and they are perfect for wider tunnels with multi-modal traffic.

We have been and continue to be a part of some of the most complex and ambitious immersed tunnel projects in the world. From the the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge Project, to tunnels beneath runways of Schiphol Airport, our work pushes the boundaries of what is possible to realise ambitious links between cities and nations.

Our expertise on immersed tunnels

A rich heritage in leading immersed tunnels

Some of the first immersed tunnels were developed in the Netherlands, as an ideal solution to crossing the many rivers across the country. We have built on that heritage and today our immersed tunnels represent the majority of immersed tunnels across the country – while taking our expertise to increasingly complex projects around the world and have become a world leading design and engineering consultant in this field.

Experience in all phases of immersed tunnels
From the first feasibility studies and concepts, through design, to construction and operation – we provide a spectrum of services across the tunnel lifecycle. With our parent companies, Royal HaskoningDHV & Witteveen+Bos, our services cover everything from geotechnical analysis and structural engineering, to landscape designs and aesthetics for tunnel portals.

Thinking beyond the tunnel
Tunnels are just one part of a full mobility system. We take a holistic approach, thinking beyond the tunnel itself to incorporate environmental considerations, wildlife migration, navigation and waterway use – and ensuring the final tunnel connects seamlessly with the environment and existing networks.

Embracing digital to enhance engineering
We have harnessed digitalisation to improve our engineering and analysis. Through BIM we ensure the highest standard of project information management and collaboration between all parties and stakeholders. While we use digital models to engage with stakeholders and partners to drive projects forward.
