Green light for construction Fehmarnbelt tunnel

Copyright Femern A/S
The German Federal Administrative Court has given final permission to build the Fehmarnbelt tunnel between Germany en Denmark. The various complaints were after careful consideration dismissed. This means that the construction of the tunnel on the German side can start. The construction of preparatory temporary works on the Danish side has already begun.
The Fehmarnbelt tunnel will run from Rødbyhavn in Denmark to Puttgarden in Germany. The link will reduce the travel time significantly between continental Europe and Scandinavia and eliminate the time spent on embarking, disembarking and waiting for ferries. The approx. 19 km fixed link will comprise a 17.6km long immersed tunnel which will be both the longest immersed tunnel and longest combined rail and road tunnel built to date.
